Chapter 4 - Margaret Had Not Stolen $2.7 Million In Cash
The truth was more complicated than theft.
That mattered.
Arthur was careful about language.
“Do not say Margaret stole $2.7 million.”
“Why not?”
“Because some services were actually performed.”
The trust owned several large residences and guest properties.
MC Residential Services billed for maintenance coordination.
Staff management.
Landscaping supervision.
Event preparation.
Security contracting.
Those services existed.
The problem was price.
And ownership.
Margaret controlled MC Residential through a holding company.
She never disclosed that relationship properly to the independent trustees.
Then she approved invoices from her own company.
Some were inflated.
Some duplicated services already paid through other vendors.
Some included management fees far above market rate.
And some were supported by almost nothing.
Arthur estimated that at least $1.1 million required immediate challenge.
Potentially more.
I stared at the forensic accounting summary.
“Why would she do this? She already has money.”
Arthur gave me the answer I should have expected.
“Because the Carter company is in trouble.”
Daniel’s family business had been deteriorating for three years.
Henry had built it conservatively.
Margaret expanded aggressively after his death.
One hotel conversion ran over budget.
A retail portfolio lost two anchor tenants.
She borrowed to cover operating shortfalls.
Then borrowed again.
MC Residential became a private pipeline.
Trust money entered the LLC.
The LLC paid expenses associated with other Carter businesses.
Margaret told herself she was keeping Henry’s legacy alive.
Arthur called it self-dealing.
I called it a lie.
Then I asked the harder question.
“Did Daniel know?”
Arthur’s expression changed.
“I haven’t found evidence that he did.”
I should have felt relief.
Instead I remembered Daniel telling me:
If you can’t respect my mother, leave.
Maybe he did not know about the money.
May you like
But he had chosen ignorance every time I asked.
That was not the same as innocence.
