Chapter 7 - Lizzy’s School Noticed Before I Did
Her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Halpern, documented:
frequent requests for snacks.
Falling asleep once after lunch.
Wearing the same sweatshirt three days in one week.
Nothing individually alarming.
Then Lizzy began hoarding:
crackers
from classroom snack bins.
The school counselor called Gloria.
Gloria said:
“Lizzy has food anxiety because her mother died.”
Plausible.
Childhood grief can manifest in:
strange ways.
The counselor suggested:
therapy.
Gloria said Lizzy was already seeing someone.
Not true.
She had stopped therapy:
four months earlier.
Why?
Copay?
No.
Covered.
Gloria said:
“It makes her worse afterward.”
The school did not know:
that.
I did not know:
any of it.
Because I was not listed as:
educational guardian.
I could have asked Gloria.
I didn’t.
That became a major part of what I later had to accept.
I wanted:
updates.
But only the kind offered voluntarily.
I did not want to appear like:
I was evaluating her parenting.
That distinction cost:
