Chapter 9 - The Night I Found Her Was Not the First Long Confinement

Child protective services interviewed Lizzy using:
age-appropriate methods.
They did not sit her at a table and demand:
chronology.
They asked:
where she slept,
when she ate,
what happened when Grandma got angry,
whether she could open the closet door.
Lizzy said:
“No.”
“How long do you stay?”
“Until Grandma says.”
“What do you do if you need the bathroom?”
“Sometimes she lets me out.”
“Sometimes?”
Lizzy nodded.
“Sometimes I have the bottle.”
My stomach turned.
A bottle.
Not for water.
A child’s plastic training container Gloria kept inside for long confinements.
That fact transformed:
everything.
The night I found Lizzy, she had been locked inside at approximately:
6:40 p.m.
Gloria left at:
7:15
to play cards at her friend Brenda’s house.
She planned to return:
around eleven.
Why was Lizzy locked inside?
She took:
two cheese sticks
from the refrigerator without asking.
Gloria said she had already eaten dinner.
Lizzy said dinner was:
half a bowl of canned soup.
There were grocery records.
School observations.
Medical weights.
No single dramatic proof of systematic starvation.
But a concerning pattern of:
food restriction,
punitive control,
inadequate supervision.
And confinement.
May you like
That part was clear.
