Chapter 13 - Emma Started Getting Strong Again

Recovery changed once fear was removed from the room.

That was the first thing Emma’s doctor said after three weeks in the new residence.

Her appetite improved.

Her sleep deepened.

The constant tension in her shoulders eased.

The panic that had once risen at every footstep in the hallway began to fade.

Even Lily changed.

The baby stopped crying so violently at sudden voices. She smiled more. Slept longer. Reached for Ryan with easy trust and curled into Emma without flinching at sharp sounds.

Ryan saw all of it and felt the weight of what had been stolen.

Not just safety.

Peace.

Ordinary peace.

One evening he found Emma by the window with Lily asleep against her chest, looking out at the ocean beyond the resort lawns.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

She turned.

“For what?”

“For not seeing it sooner. For leaving you here. For believing she was just difficult instead of dangerous.”

Emma looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said something he never forgot.

“I needed you to believe me more than I needed you to hate her.”

That struck him harder than any accusation could have.

Because it was true.

He could rage at Diane forever, and maybe part of him always would.

But what Emma had needed most was simpler and more sacred:

to be believed.

From then on, Ryan stopped centering his guilt and started centering repair.

He listened.

He asked before assuming.

He stayed home more.

And slowly, painstakingly, Emma began trusting the house around her again.
