Chapter 7 - The Footage From Before That Afternoon
Ryan turned the live feed into evidence that same day.
He called resort security, corporate counsel, and the private physician overseeing Emma’s recovery. He preserved the recording and requested immediate access to the prior archive.
What he found made his blood run cold.
The camera had captured weeks of things Diane thought happened in secret.
Diane snatching Lily out of Emma’s arms while the baby screamed.
Diane dumping Emma’s meals into the trash, then telling Ryan on the phone that Emma refused to eat.
Diane standing over Emma at three in the morning, hissing that Ryan only stayed because of pity.
Diane gripping Emma’s chin and forcing her to repeat, “I’m sorry I failed this family.”
Diane leaning over the cradle, glaring at Lily, and muttering, “You should have been a boy.”
On another clip, Emma tried to stand too quickly to reach the baby and nearly collapsed. Diane did not help her. She just watched.
The most damaging video came from eight days before the chicken incident.
Emma sat in the same cream armchair, exhausted and pale. Diane stood over her with a folder of documents.
“Sign the temporary guardianship.”
Emma frowned. “Why?”
“In case something happens while Ryan travels.”
Emma tried to read the pages, but Diane kept flipping them.
Emma shook her head.
Then Diane said the thing that made Ryan understand the real plan.
“If you can’t give him the family he needs, the least you can do is stop standing in the way of the one he should have had.”
Ryan replayed that line five times.
Diane wasn’t only humiliating Emma.
She had been trying to weaken her, isolate her, and maybe even maneuver around her legally.
