Chapter 1 - “Nobody Here Wants You”

Emily Hayes was crying beside a cream dining chair when Victoria crossed the private country club salon toward her.

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall glass doors. Beyond them, several guests lingered on the terrace, close enough to see movement inside but not close enough to understand the argument that had already begun.

Victoria seized the back of Emily’s chair and jerked it violently away.

The chair legs scraped across the polished stone.

Emily jumped.

Before the little girl could move, Victoria slammed one open palm onto the dark dining table inches from her.

The crack echoed through the salon.

Emily recoiled, completely unharmed but terrified.

“STOP CRYING. NOBODY HERE WANTS YOU.”

Tears spilled harder down Emily’s face.

That was when Rachel Hayes entered.

She saw her daughter pressed against the table, Victoria looming over her, the chair several feet from where it had been.

Rachel crossed the room immediately.

“You terrorize my daughter again, we’re done.”

Victoria slowly turned.

Instead of backing away, she sneered.

“She’s weak because you raised her weak.”

Rachel stepped directly between them.

For years she had tolerated Victoria’s criticism because family dinners mattered, because Richard was getting older, because her husband Michael always asked everyone not to make another argument bigger than it already was.

But Emily was eight.

And she had just been told nobody wanted her.

Rachel grabbed Victoria firmly by both upper arms and gave one forceful shove.

Victoria dropped heavily into the cream chair.

Rachel released her at once.

Emily remained several feet behind her, safe.

Victoria started to rise.

Rachel pulled out her phone.

“Dad. Get in here. Now.”

Something changed in Victoria’s face.

Not anger.

Alarm.

Less than a minute later, the large glass doors opened.

Richard Hayes entered from the adjoining corridor in a dark navy jacket.

He took in the room quickly.

Emily crying.

Rachel standing between her and Victoria.

The displaced chair.

Victoria rising.

Richard strode toward his wife.

Victoria immediately said, “This child has been causing a scene all afternoon.”

Rachel answered, “She told Emily nobody here wanted her.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Victoria laughed dismissively.

“She cries over everything.”

Richard reached her and slapped her once across the face.

Victoria recoiled and dropped beside the chair, one hand flying to her cheek.

Richard stopped there.

No second strike.

“Go near that child again, and you’re out of this family.”

For several seconds Victoria simply stared up at him.

Then she looked past him.

Past Rachel.

Straight at Emily.

And said quietly:

“She shouldn’t even be a Hayes.”

Richard froze.

Rachel’s anger vanished into confusion.

Victoria saw her husband’s expression and immediately knew she had said too much.

Emily looked from one adult to another.

“What does that mean?”

Richard did not answer.

Victoria’s face lost its color.

And Rachel understood that the cruelty she had just witnessed was sitting on top of something much older than an argument between a grandmother and a frightened child.

Something Richard already knew.

May you like

Something Victoria had spent decades protecting.
