Chapter 5 - Emily Thought She Had Caused the Family Fight

Rachel found Emily sitting on her bedroom floor that night with a family photo album open across her knees.

“Mom?”

Rachel sat beside her.

“What?”

“Did I make Grandma mad because I asked about the man?”

“No.”

Emily looked unconvinced.

“She told me to stop.”

“That does not make what she did okay.”

“Grandpa hit her.”

Rachel paused.

“Yes.”

“You pushed her.”

“Yes.”

Emily’s eyes filled again.

“Everybody got mad because I asked.”

There.

That was what Rachel needed to correct before explaining anything else.

“No.”

Emily looked at her.

“The adults made choices after you asked a normal question.”

“Who was the man?”

Rachel considered.

Michael wanted to tell Emily himself.

So Rachel said:

“Someone connected to Dad’s birth. Dad is learning about him too.”

Emily frowned.

“Is Grandpa Richard still Dad’s dad?”

“Yes.”

Immediate.

No hesitation.

“Then why does it matter?”

Rachel almost smiled.

Children sometimes reach the stable truth faster than adults.

“It matters because Dad should know the truth about himself.”

“Is Dad sad?”

“Yes.”

“Is he not a Hayes?”

Rachel turned toward her fully.

“Dad’s name is Michael Hayes. Grandpa Richard raised him. They love each other. Biology does not erase forty years of being father and son.”

Emily thought.

Then:

“Grandma said I shouldn’t be one.”

“I know.”

“Was she lying?”

Rachel answered carefully.

“She was using a secret to hurt you.”

That was more accurate than arguing technical surname law with an eight-year-old.

Then Emily asked:

“Does Grandma hate me?”

Rachel refused the comforting lie.

“I don’t know exactly what Grandma feels.”

Emily’s face tightened.

“But I know her feelings are her responsibility. Not yours.”

That became the sentence Rachel repeated for months.

Then Michael entered.

He had been crying.

Emily noticed instantly.

She climbed onto the bed beside him.

“Are you okay?”

Michael sat.

“I will be.”

“Who was the man?”

Michael took a breath.

“His name was David Mercer.”

Then:

“He was probably my biological father.”

Emily’s eyes widened.

“Not Grandpa?”

“Grandpa is my father.”

“But David made you?”

Michael almost laughed despite the day.

“Biologically, yes.”

Emily processed.

Then:

“So I had another grandpa?”

Michael went still.

Technically, David would have been her biological grandfather.

“Yes.”

“Is he alive?”

“No.”

“Did you know him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Michael looked toward Rachel.

Then back to his daughter.

“Because the adults in my family decided not to tell me about him.”

Emily frowned.

“That’s mean.”

Michael did not correct:

May you like

her.
