Chapter 11 - David Mercer Left No Fortune Waiting for Michael

One rumor reached the extended family.
David Mercer had been wealthy.
Therefore Michael might have another inheritance.
False.
David built a good career.
Owned a house.
Retirement accounts.
Life insurance.
When he died, his estate passed according to his will to his wife and Lucas.
Normal.
Michael had no claim he wanted to pursue.
Even if some technical possibility had existed years earlier, he had no interest in turning David into a financial event.
What he wanted was:
history.
Medical information.
Photographs.
Stories.
Lucas gave him all three.
David had high cholesterol.
Loved sailing.
Hated olives.
Collected mechanical pencils.
Could not sing.
Michael discovered he also hated olives.
Rachel told him:
“Genetic destiny.”
He rolled his eyes.
Then Lucas told a story.
When he was thirteen, he found David looking at an old envelope.
David said:
“Sometimes doing nothing feels like respecting someone until enough years pass and you realize you were just afraid.”
Michael knew immediately who the sentence was about.
He asked:
“Did he regret not pushing harder?”
“Yes.”
That complicated the story further.
David had respected Richard’s family boundaries.
Maybe too much.
Three adults had all deferred:
Victoria afraid.
Richard protective.
David cautious.
Michael remained uninformed.
No mastermind.
A system of adults calling silence:
love.
Then Michael visited David’s grave.
Alone.
He did not make a speech.
He stood.
Read the name.
Touched the stone once.
Then left.
Richard remained Dad.
David became something else.
Not less meaningful because the category was different.
Biological father.
Lost possibility.
A man Michael wished he had met.
May you like
Those truths could coexist.
