Chapter 14 - Emily Chose the Relationship Victoria Could Have

At fourteen, Emily no longer cried every time Victoria entered a room.

She also did not forget.

Victoria had changed in measurable ways.

No comments about blood.

No “real Hayes” language.

No treating family invitations as entitlement.

When Emily disagreed, Victoria sometimes became visibly tense.

Then stopped herself.

That mattered.

One afternoon they sat together at the country club.

Same building.

Different room.

Emily asked:

“Do you wish Dad wasn’t David’s son?”

Victoria answered immediately.

“No.”

Emily watched her.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you act like it?”

Victoria took time.

“Because I spent so long defending one version of my life that I started treating the truth like an enemy.”

Emily considered that.

Then:

“That sounds exhausting.”

Victoria laughed.

“It was.”

Then Emily asked:

“Do you wish I didn’t look like him?”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“Did you before?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

Emily nodded.

She appreciated the truth more than a retroactive sainthood.

Then:

“I don’t think you get to be normal grandma.”

Victoria looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“You’re Grandma Victoria.”

“Okay.”

“You don’t get surprise visits.”

“Okay.”

“You don’t get to tell Mom she’s keeping me from you.”

“Okay.”

“And if you ever tell me I don’t belong again, I’m done.”

Victoria swallowed.

“Okay.”

Emily smiled faintly.

“Good.”

The relationship finally had terms clear enough that nobody had to guess who controlled:

it.

Emily did.

May you like

At least her side.
