Chapter 1 - The Hand Beneath the Hallway

Emily Hart had been kneeling beside the floor vent for less than a minute when Victoria found her.

The hallway of the Hart estate was quiet in the warm afternoon light, polished ivory marble glowing beneath brass sconces and dark walnut panels. Emily’s pale-blue dress spread around her knees while she worked quickly, almost frantically, breaking a slice of bread into pieces small enough to fit between the narrow metal slats.

One crumb.

Then another.

Then three at once.

She leaned closer to the grate.

“Here.”

The word was barely louder than a breath.

Something moved beneath the floor.

Emily’s frightened eyes darted toward the far end of the hallway.

Then a hand closed around her hair.

Victoria yanked her backward.

Emily screamed.

“Let go of me!”

Breadcrumbs scattered across the marble.

Victoria released Emily’s hair only to swat the remaining bread from her hand.

“What did I tell you?”

Emily recoiled.

Her heel slipped on the smooth floor.

She toppled sideways and landed on one hip and elbow, startled but uninjured.

Tears came immediately.

Victoria towered over her.

“Stay away from that vent!”

Emily stared up at her.

Not with the ordinary fear of a child being punished.

With panic.

“Please.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“You heard me.”

Footsteps sounded from the far end of the corridor.

Fast.

Michael Hart entered at a run.

He saw his daughter on the floor and dropped beside her immediately.

“Emily.”

She reached for him.

Michael lifted her securely against his chest.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

He checked her face, shoulders, arms.

“You hurt?”

Emily shook her head.

Michael turned toward Victoria.

His free hand tightened at his side.

“What have you done?”

Victoria opened her mouth.

Then Emily whispered against her father’s shoulder:

“Dad…”

Michael felt her entire body tense.

She was not looking at Victoria.

She was looking down.

At the vent.

Michael followed her gaze.

Something pale moved in the darkness beneath the metal grate.

His mind refused to understand it at first.

Then fingers pushed weakly between the bars.

A human hand.

Dirty.

Trembling.

Reaching.

One of Emily’s breadcrumbs lay beside it.

Michael froze.

Behind him, Victoria saw the hand too.

Every trace of anger disappeared from her face.

Her mouth opened.

One hand rose toward it.

“Oh my God.”

The fingers moved again.

Michael slowly looked at Victoria.

She had gone white.

And whatever question he had been about to ask about Emily suddenly became irrelevant.

Because his daughter had not been feeding an animal under the floor.

May you like

She had been feeding a person.
