Chapter 3 - Rachel Was Supposed to Be in Richmond

The story Michael had been told was simple.
Rachel arrived at the Hart estate at eleven the previous morning.
She had come to speak with Michael about their father, Charles Hart, and several changes recently made inside the family office.
Michael was not home.
He was in Washington for a board meeting.
Victoria met Rachel instead.
According to Victoria, the conversation became hostile.
Rachel accused Victoria of interfering in family finances.
Victoria accused Rachel of trying to control Michael.
Rachel left around two in the afternoon.
She supposedly told Victoria she was driving to Richmond to stay with a friend.
Michael tried calling that night.
No answer.
That was unusual.
Not yet terrifying.
Rachel had a habit of shutting off her phone when angry.
Then morning came.
Still nothing.
Michael texted:
Call me when you stop being dramatic.
He regretted that message now.
At noon, Rachel’s legal assistant called.
“She didn’t show up.”
“For what?”
“A bank meeting.”
Michael had not known about it.
Rachel was supposed to meet a private-bank compliance officer regarding their father’s accounts.
Michael called Victoria.
She said:
“Rachel probably wants everyone panicking so she can control the conversation.”
It sounded like Rachel.
Or at least it sounded like the version of his sister Michael had accepted whenever family disagreements exhausted him.
Then Emily heard the voice.
By the time emergency workers opened the old utility access, Michael was standing in the service corridor with police, paramedics, and the estate manager.
The corridor was narrow but walkable.
Not a pipe.
Not a tiny air duct.
An unfinished maintenance space beneath the mansion.
Near the middle, behind a second internal maintenance gate, they found Rachel.
Alive.
Conscious.
Dehydrated.
Exhausted.
A shallow cut on one palm from trying to manipulate the metal grate.
No major injury.
She had been trapped there for roughly twenty-two hours.
Emily’s bread sat scattered on the concrete beside her.
Michael dropped to his knees.
“Rachel.”
His sister looked up.
Then past him.
“Where is she?”
Michael knew exactly who she meant.
“Victoria?”
Rachel’s face hardened.
“Don’t let her leave.”
That sentence changed everything.
Michael turned.
Victoria was no longer standing at the service-hall entrance.
May you like
She was gone.
