Chapter 14 - Victoria Finally Told the Truth Without Making Michael the Audience

Two years passed.

Victoria completed court-ordered and voluntary counseling? Need not specify legal sentence too deeply. The confinement case resolved through the legal system with restrictions, restitution-related terms, and probationary conditions rather than a theatrical trial. Michael did not attend every hearing.

He stopped tracking:

her.

Then Rachel received a letter.

Not Michael.

Not Emily.

Rachel.

Victoria wrote:

I locked the outer service door because I wanted you to miss the bank meeting. I told myself I would release you after an hour.

Then:

When an hour passed, I became afraid you would immediately expose me. I returned that night with water and still did not release you. That was the moment I stopped being able to call what happened panic.

Rachel read it twice.

Then:

I was angry that you treated me as temporary and illegitimate. That anger did not give me the right to stop you from leaving a room.

Then:

I also used Emily’s fear against her. I told her to stay away from the vent because I knew she had heard you. When I saw her feeding you, I was furious that a child had chosen to help you instead of obey me.

Rachel’s hands tightened.

Then:

I am especially ashamed that she thought keeping you alive was her job.

That line mattered.

Then Vantage.

My mother did real work. I still structured invoices to avoid Michael’s additional approval because I knew he would question the total cost. I told myself the rule was bureaucratic. In reality, I wanted the outcome without scrutiny.

Specific.

Then:

I do not ask you to tell Michael I have changed.

Good.

Rachel almost smiled.

Because for once Victoria was not using another woman to manage Michael.

Rachel replied with three sentences.

I believe this is accurate. I am not ready for contact. Do not write to Emily. If that changes, her father will decide with her.

Victoria respected:

it.

No more letters.

That was probably the strongest evidence of change anyone received.

Not an emotional speech.

A boundary followed when nobody was watching.
