Chapter 8 - Michael Had Given Victoria More Power Than He Remembered
Michael wanted to say:
She abused my trust.

Incomplete.
He had actively expanded that trust.
After his divorce, Michael’s life became logistical chaos.
Emily lived primarily with him during school weeks and with her mother every other weekend plus holidays.
Charles had his stroke.
Hart Development was refinancing two major properties.
Rachel handled legal issues but refused household management.
Then Victoria entered.
She was organized.
Excellent with systems.
Loved solving problems.
Michael loved being solved for.
He began forwarding everything.

Please call them.
Tell the family office yes.
Whatever you think.
Then one email from the controller.
Michael, should Victoria have direct approval authority for household vendors?
Michael replied:
Yes, within existing limits. She speaks for me on routine administrative matters.
That sentence traveled.
To bank.
Estate manager.
Insurance broker.
Care coordinator.
No one knew exactly where:

ended.
Victoria decided.
Then Charles’s POA.
Michael was named agent.
He disliked using it unless necessary because Charles remained mentally capable of many decisions.
Victoria encouraged.
“Your dad shouldn’t have to sign every plumber invoice.”
True.
Then delegation.
Michael signed.
Again:
convenience.
Then family culture.
Staff learned that asking Victoria was faster than asking Michael.
Eventually Michael himself asked Victoria what the family office had done under his own authority.
Shadow power.
Then Rachel complained.
“You have no idea who can authorize what anymore.”
Michael answered:
“If it’s working, why do you care?”
He remembered now.
That was six months ago.
Rachel replied:
“Because systems don’t become dangerous when they stop working. They become dangerous when nobody knows who is responsible.”
Michael had rolled his eyes.
Now he printed that email and kept it.
Then his own role in Rachel’s missed bank meeting.
She had texted him the day before:
Need you at 3 pm tomorrow. Vantage issue. Serious.
Michael answered:
Can’t. Victoria says it’s just household billing. Handle with her.
There.
He routed Rachel back to the person whose payments she was questioning.
Why?
He trusted Victoria.
Also because he did not want another conflict.
Then Rachel confronted her alone.
Michael did not cause Victoria to lock the door.
But he created the environment where every difficult family question had one increasingly powerful gatekeeper.
That became his responsibility to repair.
