Chapter 12 - Tessa Asked the One Question Nobody Else Had

My mother’s younger sister, Tessa, became our temporary kinship caregiver.

Both Jonah and I stayed with her.

Same house.

Same school district.

Separate bedrooms.

No one forced us apart.

Tessa had seen pieces of the favoritism before.

She admitted that.

“I thought Bennett was just closer to Jonah.”

“You knew.”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“But you didn’t say anything.”

“No.”

I appreciated that answer.

No excuses.

She had been one more adult who saw imbalance and assumed family problems belonged inside the family.

One night, she asked me:

“If Bennett had come back into that hallway and reached for you instead of the bag, would you feel differently?”

I thought about it for a long time.

“Yes.”

“Would that erase everything before it?”

“No.”

That was important.

The fire did not invent the truth.

But one different decision might have shown that Bennett finally understood it.

He didn’t make that decision.

And I stopped waiting for the past to become something else.
