Chapter 9 - Bennett Finally Admitted He Never Thought of Me the Same Way

The first time Bennett told the complete truth, I was not in the room.
I read the transcript years later.
The evaluator asked:
“Do you consider Maren your daughter?”
He answered:
“Yes.”
“Without qualification?”
Silence.
Then:
“I raised her.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Another pause.
Finally Bennett said:
“I love her. But Jonah is my son.”
There it was.
No shouting.
No cruel speech.
Just one sentence.
The sentence beneath everything.
He later explained that he never consciously planned to hurt me.
He paid for school.
Birthdays.
Vacations.
Christmas gifts.
He taught me to drive a golf cart.
Helped with homework.
He believed those things proved fatherhood.
But when sacrifice was required, biology became his hidden ranking system.
Jonah first.
Then me.
He did not think of it as hatred.
That almost made it worse.
Because hatred is visible.
