Carla was not dragged away from the barbecue in handcuffs.
There was no instant prison sentence.
The hospital report triggered:

law-enforcement investigation.
Evidence included:
Lily’s statement,
my statement,
medical records,
the fracture,
Carla’s own messages,
the physical skewer,
and eventually Carla’s admission that she deliberately struck Lily.
Because Carla was an adult relative who regularly provided childcare, the history of discipline practices also mattered.
Her attorney negotiated.
My role was not to decide:
maximum punishment.
I cooperated.
I did not minimize.
The eventual resolution involved a criminal plea to an offense related to assault/endangering a child, along with:
probation,
anger-management treatment,
restrictions on contact with Lily,
and compliance with a family safety plan.
No unsupervised contact.
No discipline.
No sudden reunion.
Could someone think the outcome too light?
Yes.
Too harsh?
Probably.
I stopped treating sentencing as:
proof of how much Lily mattered.
The most important boundary was one I controlled:
Carla did not care for my daughter anymore.
