Chapter 14 - Claire Had To Admit Violence Wasn’t Protection

I had protected Mom in the courtyard.
I also crossed lines.
Dropping the lightweight flower bucket over Vanessa’s head stopped her from holding Mom.
That intervention made sense in the moment.
Punching the side of it after she was already stumbling was harder to justify.
Dragging her upright by the hair was harder still.
I had been furious.
That did not make every action righteous.
Mom told me so.
“You scared me too.”
That surprised me.
“I was protecting you.”
“I know.”
“She slammed you into metal.”
“I know that too.”
“Then what was I supposed to do?”
“Stop her. Not become another person nobody can stop.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Vanessa faced consequences for attacking Mom.
I also accepted responsibility for escalating after the immediate threat had ended.
No heroic rewrite.
No pretending rage becomes moral because the right person is angry.
Our family had spent years using justification to excuse behavior.
Vanessa justified deception as ambition.
Mom justified silence as protection.
Daniel justified avoidance as peace.
I could not justify retaliation as love.
So I apologized to Mom.
Not to Vanessa for stopping the attack.
For the part that went beyond stopping it.
I also gave a full account when asked.
That mattered because if we wanted truth about Dad, we could not demand honesty only when honesty helped us.
There had to be one standard.

Even for me.
Especially for me.
