Chapter 6 - What Dad Had Discovered Before He Fell
The folder Dad carried that night explained Vanessa’s panic.
She had been developing a separate hospitality venture called Vela Estate Experiences.
Luxury weddings.
Private wine retreats.
Corporate events.
The concept itself was legitimate.
The financing was not.
Vanessa approached an investment group seeking more than three million dollars.
To strengthen the application, she presented Vela as having guaranteed long-term access to Hale Vineyards facilities.
It did not.
Then she included financial schedules suggesting Daniel would eventually contribute his family interest in the venue operation.
Daniel had discussed investing.
He had never approved using Hale Vineyards itself as security.
Vanessa needed something stronger.
So she submitted a letter bearing Thomas Hale’s signature stating that the family intended to support Vela’s development and would consider a long-term property lease.
Dad said he never signed that letter.
The signature had been copied from another authorization.
Not handwritten forgery.
A reproduced signature attached to language he never approved.
That was what he discovered the afternoon he died.
He called Vanessa back because he wanted an explanation before telling Daniel.
She came because she knew exactly how serious it was.
The confrontation on the terrace was about that letter.
Dad intended to revoke every informal permission Vanessa had to represent Hale Vineyards.
He also intended to tell the investment group that her claims regarding the property were unauthorized.
That would likely kill her deal.
When he died hours before making those calls, the immediate threat disappeared.
Vanessa withdrew the most aggressive version of the financing proposal.
Then waited.
For almost two years.
After enough time passed, she began again—but more carefully.
This time she did not need Dad’s signature.
Dad was dead.
She needed Daniel.
And the only person with enough voting power to stop Daniel from transferring control was Margaret.
That was why Vanessa had become obsessed with “changing Daniel’s mind.”
Mom was finally convincing him to step away from her management plan.
Vanessa believed Margaret was interfering in business.
