Chapter 9 - Vanessa’s Lie Was Bigger Than The Fall

The folder contained the Vela financing materials.

Dad’s notes.

Copies of the signature page he disputed.

Emails with the investment group.

And one handwritten line:

Ask Daniel whether he authorized this. Do not assume Vanessa speaks for him.

Daniel read it over and over.

“I didn’t.”

Mom looked at him.

“You didn’t what?”

“I never authorized her to represent my interest as committed.”

He found another page.

A projection showing future use of Hale Vineyards’ wedding facilities as part of Vela’s operating model.

Daniel’s face changed.

“I’d seen an earlier version.”

“What did it say?” I asked.

“Possible partnership.”

“This says committed facility access.”

“I never approved that.”

Now Dad’s final argument had context.

Vanessa had not merely made an ambitious proposal.

She had allowed outsiders to believe Hale family property would support her venture.

Dad discovered his reproduced signature attached to that narrative.

He demanded she fix it.

She returned to the estate.

They argued.

He fell.

Then she lied about being there.

The fall might still have been accidental.

But almost everything around it was deliberate.

Daniel finally asked Mom:

“Did she touch Dad?”

Mom’s voice shook.

“She grabbed his forearm.”

“Did she push him?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

That answer mattered.

Mom could have made Vanessa into a murderer.

She did not.

Even after Vanessa attacked her in Napa.

Even after years of fear.

She stuck to what she saw.

That made Daniel believe her more.

Mom said:

“Your father pulled away. His foot slipped. I saw it.”

Daniel whispered:

“So she didn’t kill him.”

Mom’s eyes filled.

“No. But she lied about being there because she knew why he was angry.”

Daniel sat back down.

The distinction did not save his marriage.

In some ways, it made the truth harder.

There would be no easy monster.
