Chapter 5 - Why Mom Lied To The Police
I could not understand this part at first.
“You saw Vanessa there?”
Mom nodded.
“And you told police Dad was alone?”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She looked down at her hands.
“Because she begged me.”
That answer made me furious.
Not because it was unbelievable.
Because it was painfully believable.
Vanessa had gone down the steps immediately after Dad fell.
She checked his pulse.
Mom screamed for an ambulance.
Vanessa stopped her.
Not physically.
With words.
“Think about Daniel.”
Mom stared at her.
Vanessa said Dad slipped.
She had not pushed him.
If Mom told police there had been an argument, Daniel’s marriage would be destroyed.
The vineyard would become a scandal.
Reporters would descend on the family.
Every business dispute Dad had uncovered would become public before anyone understood it.
Then Vanessa said the sentence that trapped Mom.
“He fell when he pulled away from me. If you tell them I was here, Daniel will spend the rest of his life believing I killed his father.”
Mom was in shock.
Her husband was unconscious below her.
And somewhere inside the horror, Vanessa’s framing worked.
She had not pushed him.
The fall looked accidental.
Maybe exposing the argument would only destroy Daniel without changing what happened.
Mom called emergency services.
Vanessa left through the side drive before responders arrived.
Then she called Daniel from the hotel and acted as though she had just learned about the accident.
Mom repeated the lie.
Dad fell alone.
For months, Margaret told herself she was protecting her son.
Then protecting Daniel became protecting the marriage.
Protecting the vineyard.
Protecting the family’s public reputation.
Every week that passed made telling the truth harder.
After a year, admitting the lie meant admitting she had misled investigators.
After two, it meant admitting she allowed Vanessa to live inside the family while carrying the truth.
So Mom stayed silent.
