Chapter 13 - Elise’s Apology Could Not Restore A Sister
Elise accepted responsibility before Grant did.
Not immediately.
First she blamed him.
Then her divorce.
Then panic.
Then the fact that she never “personally wanted Audrey dead.”
Audrey listened to none of it.
Months later, Elise sent a handwritten letter through attorneys.
The first page still contained explanations.
The second improved.
The final paragraph contained the only sentence Audrey respected:
Grant manipulated me, but I was the person who opened the bottle, crushed the tablets, and put them into your drink. No one forced my hand.
Audrey read that line several times.
Then folded the letter.
She did not reply.
Years of childhood memories still existed.
Summer trips.
Christmas mornings.
Sharing a bedroom.
Elise holding Audrey’s hand at their mother’s funeral.
Those things did not vanish.
Neither did the image of Elise standing beside Audrey’s coffin wearing her gold necklace.
That was the cruelty of betrayal.
It does not always replace love.
Sometimes it sits beside it permanently.
Audrey could miss her sister and still refuse contact.
