Chapter 7 - The Hospital Found Exactly What Audrey Suspected
The Town Car did not take Audrey home.
Her friend, Dr. Maya Reynolds, insisted she go straight to a hospital.
“You were declared dead yesterday,” Maya told her over the phone. “You are not going home to take a shower.”
Audrey wanted to argue.
She did not have the energy.
Emergency physicians drew blood and urine immediately.
Toxicology showed a significant concentration of a benzodiazepine-class sedative along with residual alcohol metabolites.
Audrey had no prescription for it.
Elise did.
Investigators obtained pharmacy records.
Elise had filled thirty tablets four days before Audrey’s collapse.
Her prescription bottle, recovered later, contained only six.
Elise initially claimed she had been taking more because of stress.
Then hotel security footage surfaced.
The camera did not show a pill dropping clearly into Audrey’s drink.
But it showed Elise returning to the unattended glass.
Opening her purse.
Manipulating something over the cocktail for several seconds.
Then stirring it.
The bartender confirmed Audrey’s drink had originally been prepared normally.
That left very little room.
When questioned again, Elise changed her story.
She claimed Audrey had asked for medication because she felt anxious.
Audrey had not.
Then Elise said she could not remember whether she added one pill.
One became several.
Several became enough to suppress Audrey’s breathing so severely that an incompetent doctor pronounced her dead.
By the third interview, Elise stopped denying the central fact.
