Chapter 8 - Grant Had Planned The Funeral Before Audrey Collapsed
The strongest evidence against Grant came from his devices.
Six weeks before the hotel fundraiser, he searched:
life insurance payout time after death certificate
does cremation prevent later toxicology
non embalmed viewing before cremation
beneficiary claim documents
Then:
can insurer delay claim if autopsy performed
The search history alone could have been explained away.
The draft email could not.
Twenty hours before Audrey drank Elise’s cocktail, Grant created a message addressed to the insurance company.
Subject:
Beneficiary Claim — Audrey Cole
The body contained most of the information required after a spouse’s death.
Policy number.
Mailing address.
Bank details.
He had not sent it.
But he had prepared it.
Then investigators found his calendar.
The funeral home’s phone number had been saved in a private note three days before Audrey collapsed.
No appointment yet.
Just the number.
Grant claimed he had been researching funeral arrangements because one of his employees had recently lost a parent.
Nobody believed him after the remaining records surfaced.
The most damaging item was a spreadsheet labeled:
Worst Case Liquidity
Audrey’s policy appeared beside debts Grant needed eliminated.
He had run multiple scenarios.
Business survives if policy pays within thirty days.
Business likely fails if payment delayed ninety days.
At one point Audrey asked her attorney:
“So I was a line of credit?”
The attorney answered gently:
“You were his wife. He treated your policy like a line of credit.”
Audrey never forgot the distinction.
Grant’s financial crisis explained motive.
It did not explain how a man married to her for eleven years reached a point where murder could feel like business restructuring.
That answer was not hidden in another mystery.
It was hidden in the pattern already visible.
Grant had spent years solving every problem by concealing it until the next crisis became larger.
Debt became deception.
