Chapter 4 - Emily Heard Vanessa Say It First

A year before Emily died, Vanessa came to our house while contractors were finishing an accessible bathroom.

She walked through the doorway.

Looked at the widened entry.

Grab bars.

Roll-under sink.

Then said:

“How much did this cost?”

Emily answered:

“Enough.”

“Trust paid?”

“Part.”

Vanessa exhaled.

“This kid is going to bankrupt all of us.”

Emily turned.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa immediately laughed.

“I’m kidding.”

“No.”

“You’re not.”

I stepped between:

them.

“Come on.”

That was my mistake.

Not because I caused Vanessa’s beliefs.

Because I repeatedly chose:

de-escalation

instead of:

clarity.

Emily said:

“Mark, don’t.”

I looked at:

her.

She pointed toward Vanessa.

“Make her explain the joke.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“It was a joke.”

Emily said:

“Then explain why it’s funny.”

Silence.

I should have listened to:

my wife.

Instead:

“Can we not do this today?”

Emily looked at me with:

disappointment.

Not anger.

Worse.

Later that night she said:

“You keep translating Vanessa into someone nicer than she is.”

I answered:

“She’s my sister.”

Emily said:

“That is not a translation.”

I remembered those words after:

the birthday cake.

May you like

Years too late.
