Chapter 9 - Owen Refused to Give Vanessa the Story She Wanted
Owen contacted:
me
before I contacted him.
“I think we need to talk.”
I almost hung up.
Then:
“Yes.”
We met at a coffee shop.
No lawyers initially.
Just two middle-aged men discussing a woman who had been dead almost three years.
He looked:
uncomfortable.
“I dated Emily.”
“I know.”
“About eighteen months before you met her.”
“Did the relationship continue?”
“No.”
“Did you sleep with my wife while we were together?”
“No.”
Direct.
No dramatic pause.
“Did Vanessa ask you to say you did?”
His face tightened.
“Not exactly.”
“What did she ask?”
“She asked whether there had been overlap.”
“Was there?”
“No.”
“She kept saying memory gets fuzzy.”
“What did you tell her?”
“That mine wasn’t.”
Then he handed me:
nothing.
No magical letter.
No secret photo.
He simply explained.
Vanessa offered to cover:
travel
and:
legal consultation
if Owen would provide a sworn statement describing his relationship with Emily as extending “into the period when Mark and Emily became involved.”
He refused because:
it wasn’t true.
Why did he meet Vanessa at the lake house?
Because she had told him she possessed:
Emily’s old correspondence
and wanted to return personal photographs.
She did.
Some old project images.
That was how Lucy saw:

During the conversation, Vanessa asked again about:
timing.
Lucy heard:
“if Mark isn’t her biological father.”
She did not understand the rest.
Enough.
Owen said:
“I didn’t know a child could hear us.”
I believed:
him.
Then I asked the question I was ashamed to ask.
“Is there any chance Lucy is yours?”
Owen looked directly at me.
“No.”
Then:
“But I don’t think my answer is the thing you actually need.”
“What do I need?”
“To decide whether it would change anything.”
It wouldn’t.
That answer came:
immediately.
DNA or no DNA.
Lucy was:
my daughter.
The frightening part was that my sister thought a laboratory result could give her permission to treat a seven-year-old as:
