Chapter 11 - Mark Tried to Bargain With Me Using His Own Son

I should say I was surprised.
I wasn’t.
Two days after child services placed Noah under emergency protective supervision and required Mark and Claudia to leave the lodge, Mark asked to speak to me alone.
He looked terrible.
No shaved confidence. No expensive swagger.
Just a man finally cornered by consequences.
“Dad, I’ll sign whatever you want,” he said. “I’ll repay the trust. I’ll give up the house. Just don’t let them take Noah away from us.”
Us.
He still said us.
“As if you’re his protector,” I replied.
His face twisted. “I’m his father.”
“That title used to mean something.”
He stared at the window for a long moment.
Then came the line I suspect he had been rehearsing.
“Claudia pushed it further than I ever would have.”
I almost laughed.
“You watched.”
He said nothing.
“You stood by while she degraded him. You stood by while she hit him. You stood by while she used his own fear to keep him quiet. And when he tried to warn me, you smashed the gift he made for me with your own hand.”
He looked at the floor.
“I was under pressure.”
“So was Noah.”
That finally broke through.
He looked up, and for the first time since this began, I saw something like shame instead of panic.
But shame was not redemption.
Not yet.
Not when it arrived only after discovery.
I told him the truth.
“You don’t get to negotiate for that boy through me anymore. If you want any place in his life, you earn it by telling the truth to the court, paying back what you stole, and accepting every condition set between you and your son.”
He opened his mouth.
I cut him off.
May you like
“And even then, it may not be enough.”
