Chapter 4 - The Papers in Mark’s Study Were Meant for Me

I did not confront Mark that night.
Not yet.
If he knew I’d seen the words under the wing, he would destroy everything else before morning.
Instead, I used the master key to open the small home office Mark and Claudia had been using during the holiday weekend.
The lodge had once belonged to my father. When I restored it, I kept every original room—including the side study off the library that now served as temporary office space whenever family stayed here for longer visits.
Mark’s laptop was gone.
That was expected.
But his briefcase wasn’t.
Neither was Claudia’s leather document folder.
Inside the folder, beneath an unsigned guest-list printout and a spa reservation sheet, I found the full document.
Durable Power of Attorney.
Prepared for my signature.
It granted immediate authority over my business accounts, the mountain lodge, my primary residence, and several family trusts.
Attorney name: real.
Firm letterhead: expertly copied.
Witness lines: blank.
Date line: tonight’s date.
The real shock wasn’t that Mark had prepared it.
The real shock was that attached to the back was a private bridge-loan statement with his name on it.
He was in crushing debt.
Not ordinary debt.
The kind of debt men accumulate when they stop thinking like sons and start thinking like desperate thieves.
There were late notices.
Collateral warnings.
One page showed a default deadline less than two weeks away.
Then I found something else.
A typed note clipped to the front.
After dinner. Present as estate-planning revision. Keep him calm.
No signature.
No context.
But I didn’t need either.
I already knew who “him” was.
Me.
I already knew who was supposed to present the papers.
Mark.
And I already knew who had helped set the table for the lie.
Claudia.
The plane wing had been the accident.
The folder was the confirmation.
But I still didn’t know why they had been so frantic about Noah specifically—unless my grandson had seen or heard something more dangerous than the existence of those papers.
I thought of his terrified face when he said there was “something in” the plane.
Maybe he hadn’t been talking only about the document strip.
May you like
Maybe he had hidden something there on purpose.
