Chapter 5 - Noah Had Hidden a Warning Inside the Airplane

The next morning I asked Noah to sit with me in the workshop behind the lodge.

The same place where I had taught Mark to sand wood when he was small.

The same place where, years later, Mark stopped coming because he preferred the life I could buy him to the work I tried to teach him.

Noah sat at the bench beside me with hot chocolate in both hands.

I laid the broken pieces of the airplane on a folded towel between us.

“Did you put anything inside this plane, buddy?”

He looked nervous.

“Am I in trouble?”

“Not with me.”

He pointed to the fuselage.

I eased it open carefully where the glue had split from impact.

Inside, folded into a tiny square, was a piece of notebook paper.

My throat tightened before I even opened it.

On one side, in a child’s uneven printing, were the words:

DON’T SIGN GRANDPA

On the other side was a crayon drawing.

Three figures stood beside a big rectangle labeled only with scribbled lines.

One figure was clearly me—silver hair, long coat. One was Noah. The third had yellow hair and a sharp mouth.

Claudia.

Above the drawing, in childlike block letters, he had written:

MOM SAID AFTER CAKE

I put the paper down very carefully.

“Noah, why did you hide this?”

His eyes stayed fixed on the bench.

“I heard Mommy and Daddy talking in the office. Mommy said after cake you would sign papers and everything would be fixed. Daddy said if you didn’t, she knew how to make you do it.”

That sentence hit me harder than anything from the night before.

“What did she mean?”

He looked miserable.

“She said maybe you’d get sleepy like last Christmas.”

I closed my eyes for a brief second.

Last Christmas at the lodge, I fell asleep at the table after one drink of bourbon and woke up groggy enough that my doctor later blamed a bad reaction to medication.

At the time, I believed him.

Now I was no longer sure.

Noah twisted his fingers together.

“I took some paper from the trash because I wanted you to know. But then Mommy saw, and she said I was bad.”

I reached for him slowly this time, giving him time to see my hand coming.

When he let me pull him into my arms, I understood just how much fear that small body had been holding.

He hadn’t hidden the note because he wanted attention.

May you like

He had hidden it because nobody in that house except me would protect him once his parents realized he knew too much.
