Chapter 8 - Claudia Broke Before Mark Did

I had them both asked to remain at the lodge “for a private birthday discussion” after dinner.

By then, my lawyer, my investigator, and a child-services attorney were already on the property. None of them entered the sitting room with me at first. I wanted the truth before the defense.

Noah stayed upstairs with Evelyn Brooks and a pediatric counselor my lawyer arranged quietly that afternoon.

When Mark walked into the sitting room, he tried arrogance first.

“Dad, about last night—”

“Sit down.”

He sat.

Claudia remained standing.

That told me plenty too.

People who still believe they control the situation rarely sit when asked.

I placed the broken airplane wing on the coffee table between us.

Mark’s face changed immediately.

Claudia’s changed more.

I said nothing.

Then I laid down the typed power-of-attorney document.

Then the note Noah had hidden in the plane.

Then stills from the security footage beside the pantry.

Then the debt statements.

Mark’s complexion went gray.

Claudia stared at the note like she wanted to tear it to shreds with her hands.

It was she who spoke first.

“This is insane.”

“No,” I said. “This is documented.”

Mark ran a hand over his mouth. “Dad, listen—”

“Did you intend to drug me after dinner and trick me into signing those papers?”

His silence answered before his words did.

Claudia snapped, “It was only supposed to make you drowsy.”

Mark turned toward her in horror.

She realized too late what she had admitted.

I leaned forward.

“It was you.”

Her jaw tightened. “He was never going to do it. I had to keep this family from collapsing.”

“This family?” I repeated. “You mean your lifestyle.”

Mark looked at her as if he hadn’t expected her to say it so plainly.

Then, in one ugly flash, the real shape of their marriage came into focus for me.

Mark had started the fall.

Claudia had learned to weaponize it.

May you like

And Noah had paid the price.
