Chapter 10 - The Funeral Director Finally Told The Truth

I called the police and my attorney before Vanessa could say another word.

Then I asked the funeral director, in front of witnesses, exactly how the wrong body had been placed in Claire’s casket.

He broke almost immediately.

His name was Harold Simms. He had run the funeral home for twenty-two years and looked like a man who had destroyed his own life one cowardly decision at a time.

He confessed that Vanessa arrived the day before with identification details, a copy of a temporary incident report, and a bracelet she claimed had belonged to Claire. She insisted the family wanted a fast, private service due to the “condition” of the body and pressured him to treat any delay as cruel to Noah.

At first he hesitated.

Then Vanessa offered a personal donation to the funeral home’s restoration fund and implied my “influence” would back her version if questions came up.

Harold did not say it proudly.

He said it like a man who had finally run out of ways to lie to himself.

He admitted that he never let me view the body privately, even when I asked, because Vanessa insisted it would traumatize me and Noah. He also admitted that when Claire appeared briefly in the service hallway that morning, he panicked, thinking he was seeing a dead woman.

Instead of helping her immediately, he called Vanessa.

That was how Claire knew she had almost no time left before being dragged out or discredited.

She hid long enough to find Noah.

Then waited.

I wanted to hate the funeral director as much as I hated Vanessa.

But the real monster in that room was not the weak man who obeyed.

It was the woman who weaponized grief quickly enough to build a funeral around a lie.
