Chapter 3 - What Noah Told Me In The Chapel Aisle

I got Noah out of the room first.
Not because I wanted to spare anyone else.
Because I wanted my son away from Vanessa.
I led him into a small side sitting room just off the chapel, knelt in front of him, and took his trembling hands in mine. A red mark was still blooming across his cheek, and seeing it nearly destroyed what little control I had left.
“Noah,” I said as steadily as I could, “I need you to tell me exactly what happened. Everything. Start from the beginning.”
He sniffled hard and nodded.
He told me he had gone looking for me before the service started because he didn’t want the casket to close until I was beside him. He had taken the side corridor because the main aisle was crowded. Near the staff hallway, he saw a woman in a gray hospital cardigan leaning against the wall like she could barely stand.
“At first I got scared,” he whispered. “But then she looked at me.”
His face crumpled.
“It was Mom.”
My throat tightened.
He said Claire looked weak and pale, with her hair messy and one sleeve torn at the wrist, like she had left someplace in a hurry. She knelt down as much as she could, held both his shoulders, and spoke fast, like she knew she did not have much time.
She told him, “Find Dad. Tell him Vanessa put someone else in the coffin. Don’t let them bury her.”
I closed my eyes.
“She said that exactly?” I asked.
Noah nodded. “And she said not to tell Vanessa first.”
“Why not?”
His lower lip shook.
“Because she said Vanessa would try to stop me.”
There it was.
The truth, plain and brutal, coming from the one person in that building with no reason to lie.
Then Noah reached into his little pocket and pulled out something folded and crumpled.
A paper receipt.
“She gave me this too,” he said. “She told me if you didn’t believe me, this would help.”
I unfolded it.
It was from St. Augustine Medical Center.
The date was today.

And the patient name line didn’t say Claire Bennett.
It said: Jane Doe.
