Chapter 2 - The Body In The Coffin Was Not Claire

The room broke into whispers behind me, but I barely heard them.

My palms stayed pressed against the lid while my mind tried to catch up with what Noah had just said. Vanessa stood several feet away now, stiff and pale, no longer trying to act offended. Noah remained behind me, crying quietly, but I could feel him watching every movement I made.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said shakily, “don’t do this here.”

That sentence decided it for me.

If this had been grief, she would have said Claire wouldn’t want this.

If this had been dignity, she would have begged me to wait.

But what I heard in her voice was fear.

I turned to the funeral director.

“Open it.”

His face blanched. “Mr. Bennett, your wife instructed us that—”

“I said open it.”

Vanessa stepped forward at once. “You’re upsetting everyone. Claire’s body was badly damaged, and Noah is confused—”

I cut her off without looking at her.

“Open. It.”

The funeral director’s hands trembled as he signaled the assistant to help him. Slowly, they lifted the lid back.

At first all I saw was white satin and flowers.

Then I looked closer.

The woman inside had darkened skin from postmortem cosmetic work, carefully styled hair, and a white dress chosen to resemble what Claire might have worn—but she was not Claire.

I knew it instantly.

Claire had a faint crescent scar near her collarbone from falling off a horse when she was nineteen. It was gone. The woman’s hands were broader. Her chin was shaped differently. Even under the careful makeup, she was a stranger.

My knees nearly gave out.

“No,” I whispered. “That’s not her.”

The director stared down, horrified, then toward Vanessa.

I turned so slowly it felt inhuman.

Vanessa had gone completely white.

“What the hell did you do?”

She opened her mouth, then shut it.

Noah started crying harder behind me.

And the second I heard him, I understood that he hadn’t been confused.

He had been trying to save me from burying the wrong woman.
