Chapter 11 - The Transfers Led Straight Back To Vanessa

While officers separated witnesses, my attorney, Lydia Mercer, arrived and started making calls.

Within an hour, she confirmed what Claire had suspected.

The company receiving Noah’s trust money—Brightline Family Consulting—was a shell entity linked through two corporate layers to Vanessa’s younger brother in Wilmington. The money had not gone to school expenses, healthcare, or anything involving Noah. It had been used for credit-card payments, luxury travel, and deposits on a new property Vanessa had been trying to buy in her own name.

Using my signature had been reckless.

Using Noah had been monstrous.

One bank employee later confirmed that the authentication device used on several transfers was registered to a tablet kept inside our house. Another remembered that a woman matching Vanessa’s description had come in twice asking how to “simplify beneficiary access” for a child account.

Claire sat beside Noah in the chapel’s side room while Lydia explained this to me. Every word tightened the same knot in my chest: the woman I had let into my son’s life had not merely disliked Claire.

She had built a scheme around believing she could replace her.

Replace her in my home.

Replace her in Noah’s emotional life.

Replace her in any decision that mattered.

And when money entered the picture, she decided she could replace her even in death.

I walked out to where Vanessa sat under watch near the foyer.

“All that for money?” I asked.

She stared at me, exhausted and cornered.

“It wasn’t just money.”

That answer somehow made her even more frightening.

Because it meant she had never seen Claire as a person.

Only as an obstacle.
