Chapter 10 - Why Victoria wanted Ava overseas
The simplest explanation was not money.
Victoria did not gain Ava’s trust fund by taking her abroad.
She was not becoming guardian through a secret document.
She did not own Daniel’s assets.
The motive was control.
Victoria knew the court hearing would reduce her role.
Daniel’s attorney had already recommended that he handle communication directly rather than through family members.
Claire’s filing specifically mentioned concern that “non-parent family intermediaries” were increasing conflict.
Everyone knew who that meant.
Victoria.
If the judge imposed a structured transition plan, Victoria would lose the position she had built after Natalie’s death.
No more controlling handoffs.
No more interpreting Claire’s emails.
No more managing Ava’s documents.
No more telling Daniel what Natalie “would have wanted.”
Portugal offered six weeks where Victoria could remain indispensable.
She had arranged the house.
The charter.
A nanny.
Medical concierge service.
She planned to stay for the first three weeks.
Daniel thought she was helping him establish confidence as a full-time father.
In reality, he would have arrived in another country inside a structure Victoria created.
Daniel finally asked her directly during a mediated interview:
“Why were you coming with us?”
Victoria replied, “Because you needed help.”
“From you.”
“Yes.”
“What if I didn’t?”
Her face changed.
“You did.”
There it was.
Victoria needed Daniel to need her.
Natalie had threatened that position because Natalie insisted Daniel communicate directly.
Claire threatened it for the same reason.
Robert threatened it whenever he questioned her involvement.
Even Ava’s passport had been kept outside Victoria’s reach.
Until Natalie died.
Then the boundaries loosened.
Victoria moved into the gap.
The suitcase was not the beginning.
