Chapter 6 - The email Victoria deleted from the family office
Daniel’s attorney, Michael Chen, was furious when he learned about the terminal.
Not because Daniel had booked a trip.
Because Michael believed Daniel had canceled it.
Three days earlier, Michael sent an email:
Do not remove Ava from the United States before Friday’s hearing. While there is not yet a formal travel injunction, doing so could be viewed very negatively and may trigger emergency court intervention.
Daniel never saw it.
Michael called him the following morning.
Victoria answered Daniel’s phone because Daniel was showering.
She said he had read the message.
Then told Michael:
“He understands. The travel idea is dead.”
It was not.
Investigators later found the email in Daniel’s deleted folder.
He had not deleted it.
Access records showed the message was opened from a tablet registered to the family office.
Victoria used that tablet regularly.
When confronted, she initially claimed Daniel asked her to manage his email.
That was partially true.
Daniel often allowed her to triage schedules and logistics.
He had never authorized her to delete legal advice.
The distinction mattered.
Daniel sat in his attorney’s office staring at the access record.
“She told you I read it?”
“Yes.”
“She told me you said there was no legal problem.”
Michael looked at him carefully.
“I told you something close to the opposite.”
That was when Daniel understood the scale of his mistake.
He had not merely trusted Victoria emotionally.
He had allowed her to become an information system.
Attorney.
Travel coordinator.
Family intermediary.
Estate administrator.
Stepmother.
The same person controlled too many channels.
And whenever two people might have corrected her version, she kept them from speaking directly.
Robert had seen the pattern before.
Not with Ava.
With Daniel himself.
Victoria married Robert eleven years earlier.
At first she was warm with Daniel.
Then increasingly involved.
She remembered birthdays.
Managed family trips.
Offered to organize tax folders.
Called herself the person who “kept the Bennetts together.”
Robert mistook competence for harmlessness.
By the time Ava was born, Victoria already occupied the center of the family’s private logistics.
Natalie disliked it immediately.
Robert remembered her once saying:
“Victoria doesn’t help people communicate. She helps people communicate through Victoria.”
At the time, Robert thought Natalie was being territorial.
