Chapter 14 - Ava flew again only when she asked to
For nearly a year, Ava refused to enter a private terminal.
Commercial airports bothered her less.
The suitcase had happened inside a quiet luxury lounge where adults whispered and doors closed behind them.
Her therapist found that significant.
So no one rushed her.
Daniel canceled international travel with her completely.
When a family wedding in London came up the following summer, everyone assumed Ava would stay home.
Then she surprised them.
“I want to go.”
Daniel asked three times if she was sure.
The therapist finally told him to stop.
“Let her choice remain hers.”
So they prepared differently.
No private terminal.
No family assistant holding documents.
Daniel packed with Ava.
The blue passport sat openly on the kitchen table.
Ava touched it.
“It still says Moore.”
“Yes.”
“Am I a Bennett?”
Daniel smiled.
“You’re Ava Moore legally right now. You’re also my daughter. Names and families don’t always line up neatly.”
“Can I change it?”
“When you’re older, we can talk about what you want and what the law allows.”
She seemed satisfied.
Then she pointed at her bright red carry-on.
“No tan suitcase.”
“Absolutely not.”
At the airport, Ava became nervous near security.
Daniel did not say there was nothing to fear.
He asked:
“What part feels scary?”
“The bags.”
“Okay.”
They watched her carry-on go through the scanner and come back.
Nobody closed her inside anything.
Nobody whispered about lawyers.
Nobody told her she had to disappear for Daddy to keep her.
When they boarded, Ava insisted on the window seat.
As the plane lifted, she grabbed Daniel’s hand.
Then looked outside.
“Portugal is that way?”
“More or less.”
“Can we go someday?”
Daniel almost cried.
“If you want.”
Not because Victoria wanted.
Not because a court allowed it.
Not because the Bennett name required it.
Because Ava wanted to see a place where her mother once ate ice cream beside a marina.
