Chapter 1 - The Question Anna Was Never Supposed To Ask

The Virginia Equestrian Club ballroom looked almost absurdly elegant for the confrontation happening in the middle of it.

Warm chandelier light spilled across polished cream marble. Tall arched windows reflected the last blue of evening. White-clothed banquet tables stood beneath restrained floral arrangements while distant guests remained silent, pretending not to stare.

Margaret Collins sat in her wheelchair near the center of the reception floor.

At seventy-six, she was thinner than she had been a year earlier, but she was alert enough to know exactly who was leaning over her.

Evelyn.

Her daughter-in-law.

Daniel’s wife.

Evelyn pointed one finger only inches from Margaret’s face.

“SIGN THE HOUSE OVER—YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT DAY IT IS!”

Margaret recoiled slightly in the wheelchair.

Before Evelyn could continue, Anna Reed stepped forward from directly behind Margaret and moved between them.

“GET AWAY FROM HER.”

Evelyn turned.

The fury on her face sharpened instantly.

She raised one hand and slapped Anna hard across the face.

Anna’s head snapped sideways.

Margaret remained safely behind her.

Anna turned back.

Then slapped Evelyn once.

Hard.

Evelyn spun sideways, lost her balance, and dropped onto the marble floor.

Anna did not touch her again.

Instead, she stood protectively beside Margaret and pointed down at Evelyn.

“YOU DON’T TOUCH HER AGAIN!”

Evelyn stared up in disbelief.

Then movement came from the far end of the hall.

Daniel Collins ran into the ballroom.

He saw his wife on the floor.

Then Anna.

Then his mother sitting behind her.

He rushed toward them but did not attack anyone.

When he reached Anna, he dropped directly onto one knee.

He took both of her hands.

“ANNA—WHAT HAPPENED TO MY MOM?”

Anna glanced at Margaret.

Then toward Evelyn.

She bent slightly toward Daniel.

“ASK YOUR WIFE WHY YOUR MOM’S PILLS CHANGED AFTER YOU LEFT.”

Daniel froze.

His hands stayed around Anna’s.

His face shifted from confusion to something much worse.

Slowly, he turned his eyes toward Evelyn.

On the floor, Evelyn’s arrogance vanished.

Her eyes widened.

She did not explain.

She did not deny it.

And that silence frightened Daniel more than any answer could have.
