Chapter 9 - The Dinner Ended Before Dessert
After the confrontation, Daniel did not question Evelyn in the ballroom.
That was one of the smartest decisions he made.
He helped Margaret away from the reception floor first.
Anna stayed with her.
A club physician checked both women after the slaps and Margaret after the stress of the confrontation. No serious injuries were found.
Then Daniel called Susan Whitaker.
Not Evelyn’s attorney.
Not the family real-estate adviser.
His mother’s attorney.
Susan arrived within an hour because she had already been expecting something to happen once Evelyn realized the house documents would not be signed quietly.
Daniel listened while Susan laid out what she knew.
The new medication.
The physician’s note.
The proposed LLC transfer.
The agent provision.
Margaret’s clear refusal.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Margaret’s answer hurt.
“I tried.”
He looked at Anna.
She said nothing.
She didn’t need to.
Then Daniel asked Susan:
“Is Mom incompetent?”
Susan almost looked offended.
“No.”
That one word dismantled weeks of fear.
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had spent days in Kentucky wondering whether his mother was disappearing mentally.
