Chapter 7 - Why Anna Didn’t Tell Daniel Everything Immediately
Anna tried to call Daniel.
Twice.
Then three times.
The first calls went unanswered because of his Kentucky meetings.
The fourth connected.
But Evelyn was standing beside him.
Anna heard her voice in the background.
She changed what she planned to say.
“Your mom’s having some medication issues,” Anna told him.
Daniel immediately asked if Margaret was okay.
“Yes. But I need to speak with you privately.”
Evelyn’s voice came through faintly.
“What is she saying now?”
Anna stopped.
Daniel promised to call later from his hotel.
He never did.
That evening Evelyn called Anna directly.
“Stop frightening Daniel.”
“I’m not frightening him.”
“You’re making routine care sound sinister.”
“Who prescribed the medication?”
“I told you.”
“Why was he told Margaret had cognitive distress?”
Silence.
Then Evelyn said:
“You are an employee.”
Anna understood the threat.
Not physical.
Professional.
Evelyn could try to have her fired before Daniel returned.
That was when Anna changed strategy.
She contacted Susan Whitaker.
Susan advised her to document everything but not secretly manipulate records or create drama. Keep the medication bottle. Write down times and symptoms. Preserve legitimate communications. Make sure Margaret’s primary physician evaluated her.
The evaluation happened the next morning.
Margaret scored normally on a brief cognitive screening.
She was alert.
Oriented.
Able to explain her finances.
Able to state her wishes about the estate.
Her doctor wrote one sentence that later became extremely important:
No evidence today that Mrs. Collins lacks decision-making capacity. Sedating medication may have contributed to recent reported confusion.
Anna kept a copy.
Evelyn did not know.
That was why she still felt confident enough, days later at the equestrian dinner, to lean over Margaret and scream that she did not know what day it was.
