Chapter 11 - I Had To Admit Lenora Had Been Controlling Me Too

After her arrest, I began therapy.
At first I talked only about Dad.
Then the therapist asked:
“Why did your wife believe she could manipulate the family’s financial structure without you noticing?”
I hated the question.
Because I knew.
Lenora had been managing me for years.
Not through physical threats.
Through emotional calibration.
She knew when to praise.
When to withdraw.
When to frame my mother as intrusive.
When to call my father “old-fashioned.”
When to make every disagreement sound like proof that someone else was disrespecting our marriage.
She gradually turned family access into loyalty tests.
If I sided with Maris:
“You always choose your mother.”
If I listened to Dad:
“You’ll never become your own man.”
If I questioned Lenora:
“You don’t trust your wife.”
I kept trying to prove independence by distancing myself from the very people warning me.
It worked.
Not perfectly.
But enough.
The most painful realization?
Lenora did not need me stupid.
She needed me proud.
Pride filled the gaps.

I wanted to believe I was too intelligent to be manipulated.
That belief made me easier to manipulate.
