Chapter 5 - The Box Contained His Handwriting

After the foyer confrontation, I did not let Lenora near my mother.
I asked Isolde to stay with Maris while I went upstairs.
The blue box was exactly where Maris said it would be.
Inside were tax files.
Old insurance papers.
Hospital discharge instructions.
And one black notebook.
My father’s handwriting filled half of it.
Mostly ordinary things.
Medication times.
Questions for doctors.
Notes about dizziness.
Then the entries changed.
L says doctor changed evening pills. Need ask Dr. Warren.
Three days later:
Maris says Warren did not change them. Confused.
Another:
Bad shaking after pills. L says normal.
Then:
Need lockbox. Someone moving bottles.
I stopped breathing.
The next page was ripped out.
That mattered.
Not because a missing page automatically proved anything.
Because Dad rarely tore pages from notebooks.
Maris noticed too.
Near the back:
If this keeps happening, ask Dorian to take over meds. Don’t accuse without proof.
My father had been suspicious.
And had never reached me.
I sat on the floor of his study holding that notebook while something inside my marriage began collapsing piece by piece.
Then I found one final note.
Written shakily.
Lenora says I signed the property revision. I did not.
May you like
Property revision.
That phrase moved the case out of medicine and into money.
