Chapter 14 - The Mansion Became Evidence Before It Became Home Again

For a long time, I hated the foyer.

The broom attack happened there.

The accusation happened there.

Investigators photographed it.

Measured distances.

Collected statements.

The mansion stopped feeling like a home and became a diagram.

Eventually I sold it.

Maris asked whether I was running away.

“Maybe.”

“Will that help?”

“I don’t know.”

She smiled sadly.

“At least that’s honest.”

The blue records box came with me.

So did Dad’s notebook.

I considered locking them away permanently.

Instead, I had them professionally archived.

Not displayed.

Not worshiped.

Preserved.

Because hiding records had helped create the nightmare in the first place.

Truth deserved better storage.

Isolde eventually left domestic work and moved into professional estate management.

I gave her the strongest recommendation I had ever written.

She earned everything afterward herself.

Maris moved closer to me.

Not into my house.

That mattered.

We rebuilt our relationship without replacing one form of unhealthy dependence with another.

Sunday dinners.

Doctor appointments when she asked.

Space when she didn’t.

Protecting your mother does not mean owning her life either.

I had finally learned that control can wear many costumes.

Even love.
