Chapter 12 - I Apologized To Isolde And My Mother Separately

I apologized to Isolde first.
Not for Lenora.
For me.
“You worked in my house and saw things you were afraid to report.”
She nodded.
“That means the house was not safe for honesty.”
Her eyes filled.
“You were kind to me.”
“Kind employers can still create bad power structures.”
I had learned that too late.
We changed household policies immediately.
Independent complaint channels.
No family member could threaten employment.
Medical caregiving required documented instructions.
Employees were never expected to keep family secrets unrelated to privacy.
Then I apologized to Maris.
That was harder.
“I thought you were paranoid.”
“I know.”
“I chose Lenora’s interpretation over yours.”
“I know.”
“I let you grieve alone because believing you made my marriage uncomfortable.”
She looked at me for a long time.
Then said:
“You don’t need to punish yourself forever.”
I almost cried from relief.
Then she added:
“But don’t use my forgiveness to shorten what you need to learn.”
May you like
That sounded exactly like her.
And exactly like what I needed.
