Chapter 10 - THE SECOND ATTACK
Margaret did not accept defeat.
She moved toward Lena.
Not physically.
Legally.
A child-welfare complaint alleged Natalie exposed Lena to violence, unstable housing, and media attention.
The complaint included photographs of the birthday slap.
Statements from David and Daniel.
A report from Dr. Price.
And Rebecca’s supposed petition.
But Rebecca had never signed.
Her signature was forged.
The investigator admitted Margaret’s attorney provided the document.
The case became criminal.
Forgery.
Witness tampering.
Attempted custodial interference.
Mara secured an emergency protective order.
Still, a social worker had to visit Natalie’s home.
Lena watched adults inspect bedrooms, food, locks, school records, medical files, and family routines.
Afterward, she asked, “Are they taking me?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
Natalie sat on the floor beside her.
“I don’t know everything. But I know many people are protecting the truth now.”
Lena held the stuffed fox.
“Grandma said I make you crazy.”
Natalie felt anger rise.
She slowed her breathing.
“What do you think?”
“I think you get mad when people hurt me.”
“That is true.”
“Is that crazy?”
“No.”
“Was hitting her right?”
Natalie answered honestly.
“No.”
Lena looked surprised.
“But you said she was wrong.”
“She was. I was still responsible for my hand.”
The child considered this.
“Can two people be wrong different amounts?”
“Yes.”
That question became the moral center of the case.
Margaret’s cruelty did not make every reaction perfect.
Natalie’s slap did not erase the planned humiliation.
Complete truth assigned responsibility without flattening it.
