Chapter 13 - THE VERDICT
Margaret was convicted of conspiracy, attempted financial guardianship fraud, forgery, witness tampering, custodial interference, and financial exploitation.
Dr. Price received prison time and lost his license.
The investigator cooperated.
David received probation and restitution obligations under his plea.
Daniel received eighteen months for false statements and conspiracy.
Margaret received twelve years.
Not life.
Not ruin.
Consequences proportionate to documented crimes.
At sentencing, Natalie did not ask for maximum punishment.
She read Lena’s new card.
The child had drawn a house with three people.
Natalie.
Lena.
A small dog they did not yet own.
At the top she wrote:
FAMILY IS WHO KEEPS YOU SAFE WHEN THEY ARE MAD.
Natalie looked at Margaret.
“You taught my daughter she could be removed from love by one sentence. We have spent a year teaching her the opposite.”
Margaret stared ahead.
No apology.
No collapse.
The judge asked whether she wished to speak.
Margaret said, “My daughter destroyed this family.”
Natalie felt the old instinct.
Defend.
Explain.
Prove.

Then she let the sentence remain Margaret’s.
Not every lie required her body as a courtroom.
