Chapter 14 - THE NEW TABLE

One year later, Natalie hosted Lena’s seventh birthday.
Not at the mansion.
At a community garden behind one of Shaw Hospitality’s city hotels.
Children painted flowerpots.
A small band played.
No champagne.
No family hierarchy.
Rebecca attended.
Not introduced as mother.
Not hidden.
Lena knew who she was.
Their contact grew slowly through letters and supervised visits.
Rebecca never asked for a title.
That restraint built trust.
David attended for thirty minutes.
He brought no expensive gift.
Only a repaired wooden frame containing Lena’s original torn card.
The tear remained visible beneath archival glass.
Natalie almost refused it.
Lena accepted.
“Now it tells the whole story,” she said.
Daniel did not attend.
He sent a note apologizing.
Lena chose not to read it yet.
Choice became ordinary.
At sunset, Natalie carried out the cake.
Lena blew out seven candles.
Then asked for one more.
“For what?”
“Next year.”
They lit an eighth candle without singing again.
Hope did not need to follow rules.
After guests left, Henry gave Natalie the final family ledger.
Every debt restructured.
Every asset clarified.
Every property ownership public.
“No more hidden support,” he said.
Natalie nodded.
“What should I do with it?”
“Keep it.”
“For court?”
“For memory.”
Natalie looked toward Lena playing beneath string lights.
“No.”
She closed the ledger.
“Memory should not require carrying every balance.”
She transferred the documents to the company archive.
