Chapter 11 - DAVID’S CONFESSION
David requested a meeting without Margaret.
Natalie agreed at Mara’s office.
He arrived alone.
No navy suit.
No driver.
He carried a folder.
Inside were original documents from Eleanor’s attempted takeover case.
David admitted everything.
Margaret wanted control.
He wanted approval.
They forged instructions.
When Natalie exposed the papers, David knew.
He allowed Margaret to believe Eleanor discovered them independently.
Why?
Because Margaret would never forgive her own daughter.
“You let me live beside her for twenty years without knowing.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Natalie laughed once.
The family’s favorite word.
Protecting.
David continued.
He also knew Natalie paid the debts.
Not every amount.
Enough.
Margaret made him promise never to acknowledge it.
“She said accepting your help would reverse the natural order.”
“What natural order?”
“Parents above children.”
Natalie stared.
“Even when the child saves them?”
David looked down.
“Especially then.”
Dependence created shame.
Shame became domination.
David handed over another recording.
Margaret speaking with Dr. Price before the birthday.
“We need Natalie to react publicly.”
“What about the child?”
“She is the easiest trigger.”
The room went silent.
David had recorded it after beginning to suspect Margaret intended more than financial pressure.
“Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I was afraid.”
Natalie closed the folder.
“So was Lena.”
David cried.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
He agreed to testify.
Not for immunity.
For reduced liability and complete disclosure.
