Chapter 2 - The Silver Heels

Clara was moving so fast her bare feet slipped slightly on the spilled champagne. She let out a tiny, frightened gasp, dropping her expensive silver high heels onto the marble floor. She didn't even bother to stop and pick them up. Survival was the only instinct firing in her brain right now. She had to get out of this building before the invisible trap completely closed around them both.
Luca stepped out from the shadows near the bedroom doorway. His imposing, muscular frame seemed to swallow all the light in the room. He watched her scramble toward the heavy oak doors, his expression shifting from mild confusion to a cold, hardened frustration. He was the most powerful syndicate boss in Chicago; women did not run from him in terror. They usually begged to stay.
"You knew why you were here," Luca said. His voice was incredibly deep, stern, and carried effortlessly across the massive, open-concept living room. It wasn't a yell; it was a heavy statement of fact that demanded absolute attention.
Clara froze just inches away from the heavy brass doorknob. Her hand hovered in the air, trembling violently.
Slowly, agonizingly, she turned her head. She paused near the massive floor-to-ceiling window, the glittering lights of the Chicago skyline casting long, dramatic shadows across her pale, terrified face. Tears were streaming freely down her cheeks, ruining her perfect makeup.
She looked at Luca, her eyes filled with a desperate, crushing guilt that he couldn't quite understand. She swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
"I thought I could handle it..." Clara whispered, her voice shaking so badly he could barely hear her over the hum of the city wind outside the glass. "...but someone is watching us."
