Chapter 4 - The Widow's Secret

"Dante, I just told you," Isabella scoffed, crossing her arms defensively. "The kid was out of control. You can't honestly be mad at me for maintaining order in our home. They are just the hired help!"
"She is not the hired help," Dante interrupted.
The absolute, bone-chilling coldness in his voice made Isabella take a physical step backward.
Dante slowly knelt down on the marble floor, completely ignoring the risk of ruining his tailored charcoal suit. He gently took Sophie’s tiny, trembling hand in his massive palm, his thumb lightly brushing the skin just below the red slap marks.
Five years ago, before Isabella had even entered his life, Dante had been ambushed by a rival cartel. He would have died in a hail of gunfire if his best friend and loyal underboss, Lorenzo, hadn't thrown himself in front of the bullets. As Lorenzo bled out on the asphalt, Dante made a sacred, unbreakable blood vow: he would protect Lorenzo’s pregnant wife, Anna, and her unborn child for the rest of his life.
To keep them safe from the syndicates who still wanted Lorenzo's bloodline erased, Dante brought Anna into his heavily guarded estate under the guise of a housekeeper.
Isabella didn't know the truth. She just thought Dante was overly generous to a pathetic servant.

"Lorenzo gave his life for mine," Dante whispered softly to the little girl, though the words were meant for the entire room. He stood back up, his eyes locking onto Isabella with pure, unfiltered hatred. "And you dared to put your hands on his daughter."
👉 Isabella realized she had crossed a fatal line, but her arrogant pride was about to force her to double down.
