Chapter 2 - The Silent Struggle

To understand why an eighteen-year-old girl was sitting on a freezing concrete floor, desperately fighting a broken piece of medical equipment, one had to understand the crushing weight of the world she was trying to carry entirely on her own.
Annie had lost her lower leg in a devastating car accident three years ago—the same accident that had claimed the lives of both her parents. Overnight, she went from a normal high school student to an orphan struggling to navigate the foster care system with a severe physical disability.
When she aged out of the system at eighteen, the state stopped providing adequate medical assistance. Her prosthetic leg, provided by a cheap, minimum-coverage government program years ago, was entirely worn out, poorly fitted, and constantly breaking down. It caused her agonizing blisters and nerve pain every single time she took a step.
But Annie couldn't afford to stop walking. She had to pay rent. She had to survive.
She had applied for a housekeeping position at Nathan Graves' massive corporate estate because it paid slightly above minimum wage and offered a basic health insurance plan after a ninety-day probationary period. Annie was currently on day eighty-nine. She had spent the last three months pushing her broken body to the absolute limit, working incredibly long shifts, scrubbing massive marble floors, and carrying heavy laundry baskets up steep staircases, all while hiding her agonizing disability from the rest of the staff.
She knew how ruthless the corporate world was. She knew that if the estate manager discovered her prosthetic leg was failing, they would deem her a "liability," fire her before her insurance kicked in, and replace her before the end of the day.
So, she suffered in absolute silence. She hid her limps, took extra painkillers in the bathroom, and snuck into the utility room during her unpaid fifteen-minute breaks to try and manually fix the failing mechanics of her artificial limb.
